This week, we pay tribute to the late John Hughes (1950-2009), who in the 80s created a new cinematic landscape. His movies became the voice of a generation, their problems and anxieties laid bare and treated with the same gravity with which they saw them. Hughes’ cinematic contribution cannot be exaggerated, his influence clearly seen in any filmmaker who would deign to show us teenagers. All this week at Mogwai, we take a look at the films he directed, taking you back to another era of filmmaking.

AUGUST 17 – MONDAY, 9 PM – Weird Science
Written and Directed by John Hughes
Gary (Anthony Michael Hall) and Wyatt (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) are two nerdy teenagers stuck at home on a Friday night. On a whim, they attempt to create the perfect woman with their computer, and thanks to a freak electrical storm, the perfect woman actually appears before them. Hughes turns geek fantasy into a strange coming-of-age tale that lays out the archetypes that he would later explore in his more serious work, all set to a pretty fantastic 80s soundtrack.

AUGUST 18 – TUESDAY, 9 PM – Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Written and Directed by John Hughes
Uptight ad executive Neal Page (Steve Martin) wants to get home to Chicago in time for Thanksgiving, but his flight has been cancelled due to bad weather. Neal tries to get home using whatever means of transportation is available to him, but aggressively gregarious shower ring salesman Del Griffith (John Candy) has decided to tag along, and disaster seems to follow him wherever he goes. Many consider Planes, Trains & Automobiles the last great film that Hughes directed, filled with his dark wit while never leaving out the heart.

AUGUST 19 – WEDNESDAY, 9 PM – Sixteen Candles
Written and Directed by John Hughes
Samantha (Molly Ringwald) is turning sixteen, but her entire family has forgotten as they fuss over her sister’s wedding. She tries to get through the day the best she can, but nothing goes right as she deals with her hunky crush, the geek that has a crush on her, and a foreign exchange student that she has to look after. Sixteen Candles was the first film directed by Hughes, and it made a star out of Molly Ringwald, who for the next few years would become the face of an entire generation of teens.

AUGUST 20 – THURSDAY, 9 PM – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Written and Directed by John Hughes
High school senior Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) skips school one day by faking an illness and convinces his girlfriend and his best friend to on a trip with him to Chicago before they all split up for college. The plan seems to work, but the stuffy Dean of Students Ed Rooney suspects Ferris of truancy, and goes all out trying to reveal his ploy. “Life moves pretty fast. You don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Truer words have never been spoken.

AUGUST 21 – FRIDAY, 9 PM – The Breakfast Club
Written and Directed by John Hughes
“Saturday, March 24,1984. Shermer High School, Shermer, Illinois, 60062. Dear Mr. Vernon, We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did *was* wrong. But we think you’re crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. What do you care? You see us as you want to see us – in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. You see us as a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal. Correct? That’s the way we saw each other at 7:00 this morning. We were brainwashed.” The greatest teen movie ever made? Probably.

PEOPLE ON SUNDAY (Menschen am Sonntag)
Directed by Robert Siodmak
1929/30, 74 minutes

A summer day in Berlin, 1929: With unpretentious humor this astonishing first film by artists who were soon to become Berlin exiles deals with how the working class spends its precious leisure time. Berlin is as empty as a ghost town, everyone flees to the countryside, the train stations are packed. Erwin, a taxi driver, meets up with a young traveling salesman and his female companions, who are on their way to a nearby lake for a day of swimming, snoozing, and flirting, leaving the cabbie’s wife to sleep away her Sunday.

Billed as a ‘film without actors’, each of the on-screen participants effectively played themselves and returned to their day jobs once production had concluded. The film is the early collaboration of five young Berlin-based filmmakers – Robert and Curt Siodmak, Billy Wilder, Edgar G Ulmer, Eugen Schuefftan and Fred Zinneman – who would all go on to great international success. Produced with little financial assistance, it made film history as the avant garde precursor of poetic realism.

Music by NYKO MACA + PLAYGROUND

Nyko Maca + Playground’s music is a mixture of electro-samba, gypsy nu-jazz , breakbeat and full-on live improvisation. Made up of members Madz Abubakar (DJ), Rick Sanchez (Guitar), Alvin Cornista (Saxophone/Flute) and Nykó Macá (Vocals/Percussion), the group has released two E.P.’s: “Manifesto in the Raw” and “N.M.ation Outtakes”. Their first full-length album “NM+PG” was released in July 2009.

The 3rd International Silent Film Festival is co-organized by the Goethe-Institut, Instituto Cervantes, Japan Foundation and the Embassies of France and Italy. The festival is held in partnership with Shangri-la Plaza, YoCard, Embassy of Spain, Embassy of Japan, Alliance Francaise de Manille, Gourmet/Piasi and Official Media Partner Spot.PH.

July 21-22, 2009 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines

LINKING DIGITAL HIGHWAYS

There is no doubt that the introduction of Digital Video (DV) Technology in 2000 has revolutionized filmmaking in the Philippines . Just as the high cost of celluloid had concentrated the production of films in the hands of a few producers whose main concern was business for profit, so the very affordable cost of digital video has democratized filmmaking and given birth to a new generation of filmmakers who can now pursue their own artistic visions in film without being forced to compromise for commercial considerations.

With the entry of alternative producers into film production and with the establishment of grant-giving bodies like Cinemalaya and Cinema One and the recognition and prestige conferred on artistic films by festival competitions and award-giving bodies both here and abroad, independent film grew by leaps and bounds in the last five years not only in Manila but also in the regions. In fact and truth to tell, indie films have constituted the greater majority of all the films produced in the whole country in the last five years, and this does not include the many indie films that did not make it to commercial theaters.

Given the phenomenal growth of independent filmmaking in the whole country and the endless peregrinations of Filipino indie films from one international festival to another from which many have brought home an astounding harvest of prestigious awards, perhaps it is time to take stock of what has been produced by the indie filmmakers in the last five years, so that the growth of the indie film may be gauged from a national perspective, so that the value of the artistic achievements of indie films may be properly weighed and so that indie filmmakers may assess for themselves, together with their audiences and sponsors, their present problems and their prospects fordevelopment in the future.
